V-ACCESS
Superconducting Mgb2 storage systems for vessel electrification
Brussels - EU Funded project
V-ACCESS is an EU-funded project aimed at developing a next-generation Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) for naval applications. It combines two technologies: SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) based on Magnesium Diboride (MgB2), and supercapacitors (high-power electrostatic storage devices).
ASG Superconductors is responsible for developing and supplying the SMES system within the project. The project was funded by the EU's Horizon Europe programme for a three-year duration, with the goal of integrating supercapacitor and superconductor technologies on board hybrid and electric vessels by the end of the decade.
When used in synergy with traditional batteries, this hybrid system extends battery life, enables innovative load management, and reduces CO2 emissions. The broader application targets not only shipping and ship electrification, but also energy-intensive industrial sectors.
A key milestone was reached in December 2025: tests for the ASG Superconductors SMES system and Skeleton supercapacitors were carried out at the ETEF (Electric Test Facility) in Trieste and were successfully completed.
The project partnership includes major industry and academic players such as Fincantieri, VARD, RINA, RSE, SINTEF, and the Universities of Trieste, Genoa, Birmingham, and the Polytechnic of Milan
